Michael Gould is an Associate Professor of Music at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Michigan and has received international recognition as a performer and scholar in the field of drumset, contemporary percussion performance and pedagogy. He is a faculty member of the Jazz and Contemporary Improvisation Department and Percussion Department in the School of Music and the Residential College (College of Literature, Science and the Arts) at the University of Michigan.
Michael has received his Doctor of Musical Arts in Percussion Performance at the University of Kentucky. He received his Master of Music degree from the University of Nevada-Las Vegas, and his Bachelor of Music degree from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
He has taught at Semaine Musicale in Amiens, France, Piteå Conservatory, Sweden, the Tampico International Percussion Festival in Mexico, the Nordic Percussion Festival in Sweden, Poison Music Festival in Finland and served on the faculty of Bands of America-World Percussion Symposium and Jazz Camp. He has also served for several years as percussion specialist at Huis Ten Bosch European resort in Nagasaki, Japan where he performed with leading artists and performing groups from around the world.
Michael has toured nationally as percussionist/drumset specialist with the performing group the Dallas Brass and can also be heard on the Seabreeze label with jazz artist Miles Osland. He has also performed with John Wubbenhorst and Facing East, Pauline Oliveros, Joe Williams, a member of the Nevada Symphony Orchestra, Lexington Philharmonic, Steve Rush and Quartex, Ed Sarath and Timescape. Michael is also a member of the Alberto Rojo Trio. He is the founder of the quartet CASHEW and the trio E/N/D. Michael is a performing artist for Zildjian cymbals, Yamaha Drums and Percussion, Latin Percussion and Innovative Percussion.
He has been commissioned to compose works for dance for Anna Tanz as part of the Münich Opera and Ballet. This subsequently won the 365 Landmarks in the Land of Ideas Award for 2008 sponsored by the German government and Deutsche Bank. He has lectured, demonstrated and taught creative process for companies such as Pfizer and at the University of Michigan. Michael has collaborated extensively with choreographers, poets, visual artists and scientists. Dr. Gould also served as chair of the Percussive Arts Society’s College Pedagogy Committee for four years. His music and trio E/N/D can be heard daily on NPR’s Sonic Haiku-Michigan Public Radio.
